A couple of years ago, during an interview about my book, ´Return to My Soul´, I was asked the question, ´What was the most challenging part of your experience?’
I was quiet. I had encountered many challenges on my inner journey, and was trying to think of the one thing that had been most challenging. A moment or two went by, and the person interviewing me rephrased the question, which I answered.
After the interview had ended, it came to me. The most challenging part of my experience was that the facade I had been living behind most of my adult life fragmented into a thousand pieces, and the ´me´that I had hidden away, that I believed was bad, was suddenly visible for the world to see. It was terrifying!
I´m sharing this because I think many of us hide those parts of ourselves that we don´t like, presenting an image to the world that we think is acceptable, an image we think others will like. We do this to feel safe, to protect ourselves from the hurt of being rejected. But it has a price. When we hide those parts of ourselves that we don´t like, we´re not free to be who we really are. It´s painful, it´s restricting, it´s lonely living behind a facade.
It´s perfectly fine to be ourselves, to be bisible, to be seen. We have nothing to fel bad about, nothing to be ashamed of, but we have to discover this for ourselves so that we can stop hiding and become visible in the fullness of what we are. Only then are we whole, only then are we free.
The funny thing is, the parts of ourselves that we don´t like, that we hide, are the parts that are the most beautiful.
